['ʃæpkɔt], Thomas, australischer Schriftsteller, * Ipswich (Queensland) 21. 3. 1935; publiziert seit 1961 autobiographisch geprägte Gedichte sowie Lyrik, die universale Themen wie die menschliche Natur und die Vergänglichkeit alles Lebenden in zum Teil experimentellen Formen aufgreift. »Shabbytown calendar« (1975) ist ein mit Ironie und Präzision gestaltetes Porträt seiner Heimatstadt. Shapcott edierte wichtige Anthologien junger australischer Lyrik und war 1983-89 Direktor der Australian Literature Board; verfasst auch Literaturkritik sowie mit Formen diskontinuierlichen Erzählens experimentierende Romane.
